Artist Statement 2010
The great variety of animals in the world has held a fascination for me and they are the subjects of the majority of my work. If it flies swims walks or crawls on the earth, "I'm interested". Occasionally I am impacted by a person I see or someone I know personally and this person becomes the subject of a painting. Because I love color and the contrast of light and dark values in art work I use these elements as tools to create a mood or atmosphere to entice the viewer into my work and to communicate a love for or interest in the subject. I want to create a visual conversation between myself and the viewer.

The fluidity of watercolor paint, the brilliance of color and luminosity possible due to the underlying white paper draw me to this media. I also like the uncontrolled aspect of watching wet colors blend creating new colors and shapes that are not possible in another paint media.

Using clay or paper mache for sculpture satisfies my desire for shaping objects in three dimensions. I enjoy working with clay because of its ability to be moved and shaped with little effort into whatever form you desire. I use gesture or facial expression to express the whimsical nature or personality of the animals I create.

Pieces are glazed with a variety of colors and the surprise of opening the kiln to see exactly the color result of the firing process is exciting. Working with paper has less flexibility than clay but has the option of surface treatment with different newspaper print choices, and well as being used as a canvas painted realistically or abstractly.
